Seifudein Adem, PhD
Seifudein Adem is a visiting professor at the Institute for Advanced Research and Education, Doshisha University, Kyoto, Japan. His latest book is Africa's Quest for Modernity: Lessons from Japan and China(Springer, 2023).
Adem received his education in Ethiopia and Japan and holds a BA with Distinction in Political Science, an MA in International Relations and a PhD in International Political Economy. He taught in Ethiopia (1988-92), Japan (2000-05; 2018-2024), USA (2006-16) and China (2017). He was also a Research Associate at the United Nations University, Japan (1999), SUNY-Binghamton, USA (2002) University of Frankfurt, Germany (2017), University of Johannesburg, South Africa (2018-2022) and Howard University, USA (2022). His current research focuses on the interactions between Africa and Asia's major powers, particularly China and Japan.
Dr. Adem's administrative experiences include serving as Associate Director of the Institute of Global Cultural Studies, SUNY-Binghamton (2006-16), President of New York African Studies Association (2010-11) and member of Executive Board of the International Studies Association's Global South Caucus (2012-16).
Seifudein Adem's studies and research have been supported by the US Government (USIA, 1990), the Governments of Japan (MEXT, 1996-98, JSPS, 2008-10) and Germany (FMER, 2017)as well as private institutions in the US (Ford Foundation, 2008 and 2016; MacArthur Foundation, 2022-2024) and Japan (Tokyo Electric Power Company, 1992-94).
